Why did my refrigerator break down?
Your refrigerator may have malfunctioned for a variety of reasons. Quite often, there are multiple causes for a breakdown. Condenser coils can get clogged, or the compressor or compressor relay might have failed. The temperature control, defrost timer, or defrost heater may be faulty. A common problem with older refrigerators is a damaged door seal.
We can fix the problem, by either repairing a faulty component or replacing it, if it’s beyond repair. This all sounds straightforward, yes? However, it’s often far from simple. Correctly diagnosing the problem is the first and most important step, before troubleshooting a solution and effecting a repair. There are multiple things that can go wrong, in many different combinations.
This is why we encourage you to resist major DIY repairs and, instead, call in the experts. DIY fixes aren’t as cost-effective as you might think. Professional diagnostics and repair equipment are expensive and intended for use by trained experts. In fact, if you attempt a DIY fix, without knowing exactly what you are doing, you could end up making things worse and invalidating your warranty.
That’s why the best thing to do is to call us at Adam’s Appliance Repair.
Common problems, troubleshooting, and repair
Unusually loud noises
A faulty ice-maker or evaporator fan are the usual suspects when your refrigerator starts sounding like your SUV. It’s likely to be the evaporator or condenser, if the noise gets louder when you open the door. Perhaps debris is trapped in the blades, stopping them from freely rotating. We can replace the evaporator fan, before it has the chance to inflict more damage on your appliance.
Not cold enough
If your refrigerator isn’t cold enough, the condenser coil is usually the culprit. A thorough cleaning will remove debris build up, which can lower cooling levels. If that doesn’t work, call us, because you probably need a replacement condenser fan motor or evaporator fan.
Another potential cause could be a failure of the start relay or capacitor, which powers the condenser.
If you have water leaking on the floor, the water filter, tank, or inlet valve is probably at fault. Unfortunately, the water tank assembly is not repairable and will need replacing. If the filter is not correctly installed, it could be that leaking water. A reinstall of that same filter will solve that problem quickly and easily.
Finally, you may need a reinstallation of the defrost pan or the water inlet valve, if they are damaged.
Should I consider a replacement?
Some makes and models can last you for up to 17 years, if maintained and serviced regularly. However, at that point, you should be looking at a replacement. We can advise you with that, so call our office today.
